Color is a property[2] of light. Sunlight, or electromagnetic radiation, is comprised of seven colors, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Each color is the result of its wavelength, frequency, and quantity of energy. Electromagnetic radiation can be thought of as streams of photons traveling in a wavelike form, each photon carrying a certain amount of energy. This light energy is reflected and absorbed by everything around us. Depending on how this energy is absorbed, reflected, bent, or scattered determines the colors we experience. Color is energy.
Many people believe the human body is comprised of energy centers commonly referred to as the chakra[3] system. The chakra system corresponds with the same seven colors found in sunlight. Red associated with the root chakra, orange associated with the sacral chakra, yellow associated with solar plexus chakra, green associated with the heart chakra, blue associated with the throat chakra, indigo associated with your third eye chakra, and violet which is associated with the crown chakra. Each of the chakras vibrates in the frequency range of the color associated with it. Vibration refers to the movement of atoms and particles. Frequency refers to the rate at which the vibration occurs.
With all the impact and energy associated with color, there’s little surprise that ancient cultures[4] practiced what we today know as color therapy or chromotherapy. Versions of color therapy were practiced in ancient Egypt, Greece, India, China, and Rome. Color therapy is the practice of channeling color frequencies, through various means, to the body in order to help adjust or tune the vibrations of the bodies’ energy centers (chakras). Each color carries the specific frequency of vibration, therefore giving off its own unique energy. Every energy has its own physical, mental or emotional effect. All parts[5] of the body, based on the chakra system, have a frequency or vibrational energy associated with them. The process of channeling certain color energy can help harmonize vibrational frequencies in the body. This works through synchronization[6], which is the natural process of energies in close proximity coming into harmony.
The great news is color therapy is easy to incorporate into our everyday lives. We can influence our energy through the colors we use to paint and decorate our homes and workspaces, or through the clothing and jewelry we choose to wear. We can consume color through food, solarized water[7], color breathing[8], colored lights, or color acupuncture[9]. We can create with color in virtually endless ways such as colored pencils, crayons, paints, photography, or video. Or we can spend some time in nature and receive healing benefits not only from color but also from nature its self.
